Flash

Flash is software that enable you to produce animated visuals for a website.  However Flash does not work as well on mobile devices. 

Flash takes a longer amount of time to load.

Flash sites do not do well with search engine optimization.  It is difficult to “read” a Flash page.

Should you do flash?  What do you think?

Basic SEO for Facebook

Since Facebook fan pages are indexed by Google, then it only makes sense to optimize the content of the fan pages.  That means you should have your important keywords appear that relate to your business.  Some would say “keyword rich” content. 

When optimizing websites, the emphasis is not necessarily on the company name but rather on the company activities. When optimizing for Facebook, be sure to include the company name.   When searching for Facebook content, company name is often used.

A bigger reason to have a Facebook FAN page

There are a lot of reasons that Facebook FAN pages are important to have.  In fact we enumerated many of them in an earlier post. Those reasons focused on building trust and credibility – and the need to engage people.  Facebook FAN pages can do that.

But here’s an even more important reason.

Google reported that Twitter and Facebook impact rankings.  Fan pages are indexed and therefore are another source of traffic.  Bing admitted that these social sites also impact their rankings.

Here’s what this means.  When you do a search via Google, you should find your website among the higher ranked results.  You’ve optimized your website to do that.  But, in addition, what if you could find your Facebook fan page there, too.  You can!  That’s what it means when we say that “fan pages are indexed”.  So you need to place keywords in your Facebook fan pages.

YouTube and Google

It’s been said that videos uploaded to YouTube and other video sharing sites can drive traffic to a website.

So we decided to undertake such a test based upon a real requirement from one a website.  Go to www.aquapurepools.com and take a look at the video.  It’s accessible from the home page by clicking on “take a virtual tour”.  It’s also accessible from some of the other pages, too.

The video is a virtual walkthru of a setting that includes a custom landscaped yard with a custom swimming pool, barbeque pit, dining area, and much more.  Aquapure does this  virtual presentation for new prospects.

We’ll explain what we are doing to both the website and the YouTube optimization.  That’s the subject of another post.

Yahoo and Microsoft take on Google

Yahoo and Microsoft are working on a joint project to collaborate on Internet search.  The companies hope to meet their fall deadline to launch this joint venture.

Their hope?  Close the gap against their joint rival, Google, with Internet search.

Search engine advertisers are willing to spend money with Yahoo and (Microsoft’s) Bing, but aren’t seeing sufficient traffic from them.

Internet marketing for REALTORS

This is the first of two articles directed toward REALTORS.  Here are some general thoughts about Internet marketing of your website.

FOCUS.  You need a focused niche in real estate and then direct your market message to support that niche. Buyers and sellers are not interested in a REALTOR that they perceive as a generalist.  They want to work with people experienced in the niche that they fit. Consumers may not understand what niche they’re in, but they want their REALTOR to be there.

For example, a REALTOR can work with first time buyers or seniors.  A REALTOR can focus on specific cities, tracts, or neighborhoods.

STRATEGY.  Three primary elements an overall Web strategy includes:

-A branded IDX solution that includes mechanisms to to capture leads. Many of the IDX applications offered by MLSs are sophisticated solutions that include means for lead capture.
-A means to follow-up with leads to get engaged in their home search process. This can range from run-of-the-mill DRIP campaigns to packaging information for consumers drawn from multiple sources. 
-A connection between your offline marketing to your Internet marketing so there is synergy between the two.

ADD CONTENT. Google and other search engines like new content.  An easy way to do this is to add new pages with the new content.  Create some form of a blog in your site which increases the content on your site.

These factors will help increase the website’s visibility and appeal to search engines.  They will also help grab attention and increase the likelihood of consumers returning to your website.

Facebook grows

Facebook, Inc reported revenue of over $700 million for 2009.  Projections were to have $500 million in revenue.  Facebook’s growth – including over 500 million users – have contributed to the troubles that MySpace is experiencing.

Why is Facebook growing? 

As the largest social media site, it offers a great opportunity for advertisers to display their wares.  As companies realize the potential benefits of Facebook and other social media sites, they will invest.  In addition many companies have created their own business fan pages.  Starbucks has almost 8 million fans.  Chili’s (the restaurant chain) has almost 400,000.  American Eagle Outfitters has 1.2 million.

It is very appealing to be seen by up to 500 million users.  That’s the power of Facebook.  Once they can see traditional online advertising, they can link directly to the companies’ websites. 

Part of our entire Internet promotion campaign involves using social media sites.  We never consider MySpace, but we always invite our customers to consider Facebook.  There are other sites that offer significant value – Twitter and YouTube just to name a couple.

Visitors to website who come from Facebook are further along in the sales cycle than those that visit a website from a Google search.

Consistent site updates, high quality relevant content and good on-page optimization and clean code, as well as earning links because your site is a good site (and not because you play a link exchange game or belong to a link network) are the way to get top rankings.

Update on “speed” as a Google ranking factor

Last year it was mentioned that website loading speed could be a factor for evaluating a website for Google search results.

Matt Cutts recently commented on what was important to Google.  He said that the relevancy of a website was still the most important factor.  “Relevance is the primary component, and we have over 200 signals in our scoring”.

Why a website might not produce results

Many websites, especially small business websites, are little more than an online business card.  This has nothing to do with the size of the website, but more with the characteristics that result in only that online business card.

We believe that all websites must have the following characteristics.

Calls to action.  Visitors will visit websites to look for information and once they are done, they will move to another website.  After they are done with their research, which included visiting several websites, then they will decide the action they will take.  Successful websites have effective calls to action.  These calls to action invite users to contact the website owner.  Does your website have calls to action?

Marketing approach.  The website is not the focus of a marketing campaign but a component of it.  There must be an Internet marketing program where a website is the key component of it.  Once there is complete program in place, then the website can be developed to accomplish its role in this united effort.  What is your marketing strategy?

Website traffic.  With a complete Internet marketing program in mind, some components will create traffic to the website.  This may include search engine optimization, links, and various social media tools.   The effort is not just traffic but the right traffic.  Does your website attract the right traffic?
